Residence and Work Permits

As a Croatian national, you may visit Norway without a visa. However, Norway has a restricted and regulated immigration. This means that there is no general access to enter Norway to work or live there.  

Requirements for provision of residens and work permits


The applicant must be able to provide for himself/herself
The applicant must have a place to live in Norway (in special cases there may be exemptions to this rule)
Application for a residence of work permit must be submitted in the country in which the applicant has residence (persons who are considered specialists in a particular field are exempted from this rule)
The applicant may not enter Norway before the application has been granted (persons who are considered to be specialists in a particular field are exempted from this rule)

A work permit allows you to work in Norway. To obtain a work permit you must hav a concrete job offer.  
Students who have been admitted to an approved educational institution. The applicant must be able to provide for himself/herself

The applicant must have a place to live in Norway (in special occasions there • Persons who are considered specialists in a particular field
• Au pairs
• Seasonal workers
• Close family members (generally spouses and children)
• Persons who need protection (refugees/asylum seekers)
• Trainees

For a person to be granted a residence or work permit the following requirements must be satisfied:
• The person must be able to provide for himself/herself and have a place to live (in special cases the UDI may grant exemptions to this)
• As a general rule, the application for a residence or work permit must be submitted in the country in which the applicant resides. The applicant may not enter Norway before the application has been granted. Persons who are considered to be specialists in a particular field are exempted from this rule.

There are additional special conditions and limitations for the various categories mentioned above. Work permits granted to specialists, for example, constitute grounds for permanent residence in Norway (settlement permit) after three years, while permits granted to seasonal workers have time limits.
